We are looking for a Wellness, Health and Safety Manager (WHS) to join our busy team!

This role's key purpose is to contribute to and enhance Navitas' commitment to promoting wellness and ensuring the H&S of everyone who works, learns, or visits with us, by developing and implementing WHS programs across UPE. Supporting business unit (BU) leads in developing and implementing action plans and understanding their responsibilities.

UPE delivers quality education programs to approx. 10,000 students across 15 campuses throughout UK and mainland Europe. Our head office is in Abingdon, Oxford and is a fantastic space for people to connect. UPE consists of mostly pathway colleges, and we have a managed campus in Leipzig. It represents a diverse group of passionate, experienced staff with strong industry connections who are committed to delivering exceptional learning experiences and outcomes.

  • Lead the execution of UPE's wellness strategy in support of group and divisional objectives
  • Lead UPE in managing an annual wellness action plan and initiatives for employees
  • Support to determine key priorities for wellness, aligned to UPE's objectives and quarterly Wellbeing Pulse Check results
  • Develop wellness initiatives to support UPE priorities including resources, promotional materials, and tools to support local implementation of wellness initiatives across our BUs
  • Promote and engage people in wellness activities across the BUs and maintain an ambassador network to drive local initiatives
  • Assist in the development of mentally healthy initiatives that support our people and business
  • Lead and support UPE to achieve and enhance a positive safety culture
  • Support UPE to establish an annual Action Plan, aligned to the Navitas Group Action Plan
  • Support Executives to provide a robust submission to the Board on WHS performance and development (WHS Effectiveness Assessments)
  • Provide a Board report on the annual WHS performance each year
  • Coach, counsel and provide best practice information to management in awareness and execution of WHS responsibilities and accountabilities, incl implementation of WHS processes
  • Support BUs in implementing and monitoring local WHS Action Plans
  • Promote engagement in the review of UPE's High Risk Register and facilitate UPE Executive Team consideration of highest risks
  • Develop/commission training to address identified needs incl:
  • Train and develop capability in H&S across BUs according to training plan requirements
  • Promote developed induction training module for new employees to be aware of WHS systems and processes
  • Research, facilitate and deliver training sessions and information guides to aid in the prevention of workplace injuries/incidents
  • Contribute towards the Navitas Group development of simple and pragmatic H&S procedures, tools and resources
  • Drive an inclusive, learning and sharing culture through key priorities incl:
  • Active incident reporting and management
  • Robust risk management programs
  • Proactive employee engagement and consultation
  • Engaging learning and development agenda on H&S
  • Open communication and sharing of lessons learnt across UPE and organisation
  • Support UPE's response in maintaining and exercising the Divisional Critical Incident Plans and team in line with the Navitas Crisis and Critical Incident program (acting as Critical Incident Advisor)
  • Lead the development and implementation of Local Incident Response Teams at BU level
  • Ensure appropriate analysis and reporting of WHS performance information
  • Manage the H&S Information System and records for UPE
  • Support WHS metrics with a focus on lead indicators
  • Ensure WHS activities and operations comply with applicable laws, regulations and company standards
  • Provide effective people leadership in WHS within UPE and partner with the wider WHS team in Navitas
  • Provide WHS advice, coaching, mentoring and training to ensure managers meet their obligations, aligned to relevant policy and procedures
  • Update and enhance WHS information through Navitas intranet pages and Yammer
  • Travel as required to meet with WHS Reps, Wellbeing Ambassadors and local teams


  • Pragmatic WHS professional who can lead and operate independently with little day-to-day direction
  • Strong proficiency in WHS disciplines, such as wellness, incident investigation, risk management, training, injury management, with solid knowledge of WHS practices, standards, and statutory requirements
  • Appropriate qualification such as NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent
  • Ability to work across a geographically disperse organisation
  • Experience working in the education sector, with knowledge of project and change management principles, methodologies, and tools
  • Ability to tailor, implement and embed programmes and initiatives that are largely determined at the thought leadership level
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills across all levels with customer focus and commitment, balanced with owning and driving the WHS agenda
